Fenland's twinning history with Australia began when a current member of the Fenland Twinning Association began a fund raising campaign for a memorial to a World War II airman. Jim Hocking steered the Sterling bomber he was flying away from March town centre when the engine failed and it crashed into a field. He remained at the controls and lost his life. The memorial stands to this day in St Wendreda's Church, March in his memory.
