Tatebayashi, Japan
Picturesque Tatebayashi lies just 64 km northwest of Tokyo. For the visitor it is an easy, relaxing ride on the Tobu Trainline or by car on the Tohuku Expressway.
Tatebayashi is located in the south eastern part of Japan's Gunma Prefecture in the centre of what is known as Kanto District. Geographically, Tatebayashi is located 139032 east longitude and 36014 latitude.
Tatebayashi stretches 15 km from east to west and 8 km from north to south. It is 20 metres above sea level and measures 60.98 square kilometres in total area. The Tone River in the south and its tributary, the Watarase River in the north skirt around Tatebayashi.
Tatebayashi enjoys clean water and abundant greenery. A feature of the city is its many lakes and water features. Tatebayashi is famous the world over for its Azalea Park, known as Tsutsujigaoka Park. From mid April to early May, residents and visitors can witness over 50 species of azaleas in full bloom. There are over 10,000 azalea trees in Tatebayashi and many are over 800 years old and 5 metres high. Not surprisingly the Azalea is the flower symbol of Tatebayashi.
On the north side of Tsutsujigaoka Park is Lake Jonuma, renowned for its beautiful lotus blooms from July to August. From the end of March to Mid April, Tatebayashi boasts a wonderful cherry blossom display along the Tsuruudagawa River. Did you know that Tatebayashi holds the Guinness Book of Records record for the most traditional Carp Streamers every flown at one time (5,283).
